Marine Engineering Leve 2 – Boat Building

Whilst on this programme, you will be working towards an NVQ (National Vocational Qualification), Technical Certificate and Key Skills.

To start an this Apprenticeship you need to be employed in the boat building industry.

Apprentices will be required to have a good general standard of education with an enthusiastic approach to the trade and a determination to succeed. It is recommended that you will have 4 GCSEs at grade C or above including Maths, English, ICT and Science.

What will I be doing?
The Apprenticeship framework has been designed by SEMTA the Industry National Training Organisation.

  • Working efficiently and effectively in engineering PEO2/002
  • Using and communicating technical information PEO2/003
  • Using Wood for Pattern, Modelmaking and Engineering Applications PEO2/041
  • Assembling Pattern, Model and Engineering Woodwork Components PEO2/042
  • Finish Surface by Applying Coatings or Coverings PEO2/052
Technical Certificate

City & Guilds 2451 Certificate in Boat Production, Maintenance and Support Level 2

Key Skills
  • Communication Level 1
  • Application of Number Level 1
  • Information Technology Level 1
  • Working With Others Level 2

How long will the course last and what patterns of attendance are available?
You will attend college two days a week for two years in order to complete the Technical Certificate, Key Skills and theory on the Engineering NVQ Level2.

How will my progress on the course be assessed?
The NVQ level 2 will be delivered and assessed at the college. You will be required to compile a portfolio and complete job knowledge assessment questionnaires throughout the course. The Technical Certificate will be delivered on a day release programme at college and will involve both internal and external exams by the appropriate award body. Key Skills will be the compilation of a portfolio for each subject, and the second part will require exams to be taken and will be externally examined by City & Guilds.

What will I achieve?
On a successful completion of the programme you will have achieved the Apprenticeship in Marine Engineering NVQ Level 2.

Marine Engineering Level 3 – Boat Building

Whilst on this programme, you will be working towards an NVQ Level 3 (National Vocational Qualification), Key Skills and a Technical Certificate.

To start this Apprenticeship you have to be employed in the boat building industry

Apprentices will be required to have a good general standard of education with an enthusiastic approach to the trade and a determination to succeed. It is recommended that you will need 4 GCSEs at grade C or above including Maths, English, ICT and Science and SEMTA Performing Engineering Operations NVQ Level 2. Prior attainment and/or experience will also be taken into consideration.

The Advanced Apprenticeship framework has been designed by SEMTA the Industry National Training Organisation. Depending which route you are working towards the programme will be tailored to meet you and your employer’s individual needs.

Whilst working towards an Advanced Apprenticeship in Marine Engineering you will cover the following subjects:

  • Yacht and Boat Woodwork/Outfitting
  • Wooden Yacht and Boat Building
  • Marine Outfitting
  • Sheet Metal Work
