14 - 19 Construction and Trade |

Courses including carpentry, plumbing, electrical installation have been designed for students wanting to get work in the construction industry, and, for those who wish to attain skills and qualifications beyond the craft stage.
Students will work and study in the £6.5 million Sir Christopher Cockerell building with its specially designed workshops complete with storage space for each of the trades. Welding and Fabrication, Brickwork, Carpentry, Joinery and Boat Production and Support are located on the ground floor. Painting and Decorating, Plumbing and Electrical Installation on the first floor. |

Functional Skills in Maths, English and ICT are integrated into each course at an appropriate level. |

*Basic Construction Skills Level 1 - (City and Guilds 6218) |
This course is aimed at anyone who is
interested in following a career in
construction. It is for people who enjoy
practical work and have an interest in all
aspects of the construction industry.
Students take part in six week taster
sessions in:
- Brickwork
- Carpentry and Joinery
- Electrical Installation
- Painting and Decorating
- Plumbing
The course also covers Health and Safety
Awareness and may lead to a full time
construction course or an apprenticeship. |

We have courses to suit everybody, designed to encompass all abilities with an opportunity to progress, ultimately, on to the Level 3 Diploma.
The Diploma is the most up to date Qualification available and recognised throughout the industry.
During the course you will receive practical and theory lessons. In practical lessons you will work through a series of projects to develop your hands on skills. Finally you will be expected to produce the assessment piece set by the awarding body to prove your practical skills. |

qualifications will depend on the student’s
ability and dedication. Successful
completion may lead to improved
employment opportunities.
Students joining the Level 1 should have
grade C or above at GCSE level, an interest
in the subject, dedication and a willingness
to learn and will be expected to attend an
interview before acceptance on the course.
Those looking to join the Level 2 or 3 will
need to hold an appropriate trade
qualification and attend an interview.

City and Guilds 5780-20 Diploma in Furniture Making Level 2 |
This course is suitable for beginners and those with some experience. The course is centred around five practical projects and aims to provide the basic skills to enable the student to find employment.
Students start with projects designed to develop their basic skills and progress to more complex projects, often of their own design, which will develop their skills and knowledge in Cabinet Making.
These comprise a range of mandatory and optional units including:
- Health and Safety within furniture and furnishing making environments
- Planning for career pathways in furniture and furnishing industries

Construction and the Built Environment - Level 3 Diploma |
The Diploma in Construction and the Built
Environment provides learners with the
underpinning knowledge and basic skills
needed in a wide range of industry areas.
It explores the built environment in terms
of its economic, social and environmental
impact on both individuals and
communities. This Diploma also looks at
the different demands made upon land use
over time as well as the activities which
shape, develop and influence the built
environment. The Construction and the
Built Environment Diploma provides an
understanding of how this key sector
works from the inside out.
The Level 3 Construction and Built
Environment Diploma covers the following
subject areas:
- Develop an understanding of planning
requirements and their impact on design
- Recognise the properties and uses of
construction materials
- Explore the application of design
principles and apply acquired knowledge
to the design of a complex structure

- Basic spraying
Successful completion of these courses
can lead to further training or employment
with decorating/building firms. Students
joining the Level 1 should have grade C or

Electrical Installation. The qualification
consists of eight modules:

- Install electrical wiring systems, wiring
enclosures and equipment
- Connect electrical wiring systems,
enclosures and equipment
- Inspect, test and commission electrical
installation
- Diagnose and correct electrical faults
- Provide technical and functional
information
- Electrical principles
This qualification provides the
underpinning knowledge for the industry
recognised NVQs. Entry requirements for
this course are City and Guilds 2330
Level 2 or equivalent. |

Plumbing Studies - (City and Guilds 6129) Level 3 |
This course is for anyone looking to develop
their plumbing skills and knowledge, those
intending to become registered to work
on unvented appliances or work at
supervisory level within the industry.
This course combines practical tasks with
theory work and it is hoped that students
will have the opportunity to undertake their
certificates in Unvented Installations and
Water Regulations.
Throughout the course students will learn
how to install, maintain, commission and
decommission a range of:
- Unvented appliances
- Gas appliances
- Heating systems
- Water supply systems
- Sanitation systems
- Part P
Students hoping to join the course should
hold a Level 2 qualification in Plumbing or
Heating and be competent in Maths and
English. Candidates will not be expected
to work in the industry but should ideally,
have some experience of it. |

to the world of plumbing. You will learn all
aspects of plumbing including bending and
fabricating piping systems using a range
of materials and installing various

lead roofing work.

of the course will enable you to move on to
