Name Description
City & Guilds 3792 Certificate in Adult Literacy Level 1 or Level 2 This course is designed to meet the needs of learners wishing to gain a GCSE equivalent qualification in Literacy.

Based at Lowestoft College and several community locations, you will study using the latest tutored online courses, with friendly staff available to assist with any of your learning needs.

The courses are flexible and you can study at a pace and time convenient to you. There is no upper age limit and the courses are free to everyone.

Key Information about Literacy courses at Point 1 Learning:
  • These free courses are tailored to your individual needs and you will either study on 10, 20 or 30 hour programmes depending on your current skills
  • You can study at your own pace during Centre opening times
  • You can practice your testing techniques and sample questions from real past tests
  • The final test is online and consists of 40 multiple choice questions for which you are given an hour to answer
  • On passing Level 1 you are achieving the equivalent of a GCSE D-G grade
  • On passing Level 2 you are achieving the equivalent of a GCSE A*-C grade
  • The tuition, test and City and Guilds accredited certificate are all free
  • We also have material to support specific areas you would like to develop, for example, Spelling and Punctuation

Literacy Level 1

For these Levels, the following Core Curriculum units are covered:
  1. Reading Everyday Texts
  2. Instructions, Explanations and Persuasive Texts
  3. Reading Strategies
  4. Writing
  5. Sentence and Grammar Work
  6. Vocabulary and Word Work
Literacy Level 2

For this Level, the above units are studied in more depth. The sections within the units will contain additional Core Curriculum areas aimed at the more advanced student.

ECDL - European Computer Driving Licence Essentials (ITG) (QCF) Level 1 Certificate

ECDL is a Europe-wide qualification that enables people to gain a basic qualification in computing and to help them with their current job, develop their IT skills and enhance their career prospects.

The course is fast becoming the most widely recognised qualification in the field of work-related computer use because it is targeted at the full spectrum of the population and because of the support and monitoring of the organisations behind it.

ECDL will enable people to demonstrate their competence in computer skills. It covers the key concepts of computing and its major applications and their use in the workplace and society.

This Level 1 modular programme includes:
  • IT Security for Users
  • Using the Computer and Managing Files / IT User Fundamentals
  • Web Browsing and Communication / Using the Internet & Email
The course requirement is that you attend at least one tutor guided session for individual tuition, feedback and support which is available all day Monday and Friday.

During your course you will be also expected to study at home/work or during the available self-study sessions at the centre.

The course includes:
  • Up to 30 hours of tuition for the full programme
  • An individualised learning programme
  • Self directed learning
  • Email tutor feedback and support
Once you have completed the Level 1 course you will be able to progress onto ECDL Level 2.

An initial interview will need to be arranged before enrolling.

ECDL Advanced will allow you to demonstrate your higher level computer skills, you can show employers that you are confident, competent and efficient in a range of applications.

If you regularly use database application and need to know how to create complex databases or use advanced tools then ECDL Advanced Databases will give you the knowledge and skills you need.

Learn how to...
  • Understand the use of various data types, create input masks and validation rules, set mandatory fields.
  • Understand and create data relationships, apply inner, outer and self joins. Apply and use referential integrity
  • Create queries to update, append and delete data and create new tables based on query data. Group data in a query, Use functions and logical expressions in a query. Show duplicate records and highest/lowest values. Use crosstab and parameter queries.
  • Create bound and unbound controls, combo, list and check boxes and option groups. Set arithmetic and logical expression controls. Set sequential order of controls on a form. Create and modify subforms.
  • Create arithmetic, logical and percentage controls on a report. Use formulas such as sum, max and count. Create running summaries and data headings.
  • Create and run macros. Assign macros to form/report controls.
  • Import and export data. Link data to an external database.

If you regularly use a spreadsheet application and need to know how to create complex slideshows or use advanced tools then ECDL Advanced Presentations will give you the knowledge and skills you need.

Learn how to...
  • Understand how room and audience size and lighting etc. impacts on planning for a presentation. Understand how audience demography and knowledge of subject requires the need to deliver the message differently.
  • Use of text and graphics, ensuring there is a consistent design to enhance clarity. Awareness of issues with fonts and colours, such as colour blindness.
  • Create presentation with background, logo etc. Insert pictures and images, change position or layout of pictures. Omit background graphics from a slide. Apply 3D effects, shadows, background fill colours, textures and patterns. Crop, resize, rotate, flip an image. Convert and image to greyscale or black and white format.
  • Create and change a chart or graph. Create and edit a flowchart.

OCR ICT Skills for Life This beginners course is great for people that are new to computers and it’s a great starting point to enable people to get online for the first time within an interactive and fun environment.

The course starts with how to switch on a computer and use a mouse and then moves onto how to open files and create basic documents. You will be introduced to the world wide web and to explore how to find information and shop online. Finally you will learn how to write and send emails.

The course welcomes people from all ages and backgrounds. It is a beginner’s course so you do not need any experience at all!

The course can only run upon sufficient enrolments.

Skills for Life Through IT Level 1 Literacy qualification

This FREE course is specially developed to cater for those with little or no experience of computers, Internet and Email. It is aimed at complete beginners and is open to everyone regardless of status, education, age, ability or understanding. The main benefits of this course are:
  • It is a fun, informal and uncomplicated introduction to computers, the Internet and Email for complete beginners.
  • It is designed to build confidence and provide a basis to encourage further exploration and development of computers, the Internet and Email skills.
As part of the Skills for Life strategy, this programme will also consider Literacy throughout the course. It will give learners the opportunity to improve or refresh their Literacy skills in order to succeed in other qualifications, or in life and at work. A compulsory part of this course is an online multi-choice Literacy exam.

This ICT programme includes:
