14 - 19 Sports and Leisure Industries

Sports and Leisure courses are offered to students of all ages and abilities. The department prides itself on the success of these courses that not only equip students with the necessary vocational skills to work in a range of different sport and leisure related industries but also offer a route into higher education.

The one year Sports and Leisure course is for students who are keen to work in the leisure industry.

Functional Skills in Maths, English and ICT are integrated into each course at an appropriate level.

Certificate and Diploma in Sports and Leisure - Level 1, 2 and 3
Level 1 Certificate One year

Learners must complete all five core units:
  • Investigating the sport and recreation industry
  • Establishing working relationships with customers and colleagues
  • Investigating safe working practices
  • Investigating health, lifestyle and the human body
  • Assist in the planning, delivery and evaluation of an activity
Learners also complete two of these units:
  • Sports
  • Outdoor adventure
  • Exercise and fitness
  • Playwork
Level 2 Certificate One year

Learners must complete all four core units:
  • Working in the sport and recreation industry
  • Maintaining and developing relationships with participants and colleagues
  • Maintaining safe working environments
  • Investigating physical and mental aspects of performance
Candidates must complete two of these units:
  • Indoor sports
  • Outdoor sports
  • Landbased outdoor activities
  • Water based outdoor adventure activities
  • Exercise and fitness
Level 3 Diploma One year

This Diploma consists of a number of core units including:
  • Working in the industry
  • Organising resources
  • Meeting legal responsibilities
Optional units include topics like: sports coaching, improving sporting performance, adventure leadership, exercise and fitness facilities, spectator control and nutrition exercise.

A combination of tests and assignments, with externally set and marked core unit tests assess the underpinning knowledge. At Levels 1 and 2 these are in the form of online, on-demand multiple choice tests, while at Level 3 short answer question papers will be set twice a year. The assignments assess the practical activities and are externally set but marked by the centre.

Level 3 Outdoor Development

This course is aimed at people who would like to pursue a career in the outdoor industry. The course helps to develop a range of useful skills and a number of units are covered including:
  • Understand and appreciate the physical environment
  • Establish effective operational procedures in the outdoor industry
  • Deliver coaching sessions in an outdoor activity context
Students will be expected to have three GCSEs at grade C or above or a Level 2 qualification.

OCR Level 3 National Diploma in Sport
The OCR Level 3 National in Sport is a 2 year programme which aims to introduce candidates to the range of opportunities available within the Sport, Fitness and Leisure sector and to the breadth of work that is carried out. The candidate would need to complete both years to achieve the National qualification and will have the opportunity to obtain UCAS points, (240 points in 2 years)

The qualification offers opportunities for candidates to explore issues and concepts that are contextualised and relate to career paths whilst still providing opportunities to develop skills that would be of benefit whichever career path candidates choose. The skills developed through achieving these qualifications will enhance candidate’s knowledge and understanding of the sector and provide opportunities to develop appropriate skills.
