Shipboard Safety Officer
A 3 day course meeting the recommendations of the MNTB and Code of Safe Working Practices in respect of Ship Safety Officer training.

This course is suitable for seafarers who are about to, or are already, serving as either safety representatives or safety officers. The course addresses both accident prevention and accident investigation.

Topics include:
  • The latest UK health and safety regulations and IMO conventions
  • Duties and responsibilities of the safety officer and safety representatives
  • The safety officer's training function onboard ship
  • Accident theory, recognition and detection of Hazards and assessment of Risk
  • Safety officer's role in accident prevention, investigation and reporting
  • Site inspection and safety committee work
  • Role playing exercises simulate site inspections, accident investigations and safety committee procedure.

    A Lowestoft College certificate is issued on completion of the course.

    Shipboard Security Officer
    A 3 day MCA approved course meeting the requirements of SOLAS and the ISPS code in respect of Ship Security Officer training.

    The course covers security both onboard the ship and the interface between ship, operating company and port facility.

    Topics include:
  • An introduction to the background of the ISPS Code and relevant legislation.
  • The company security organisation, the roles of the CSO and SSO, security requirements and security administration.
  • Ship security assessments, the ship security plan, methods of conducting audits and ship and port facility security measures.
  • behavioural patterns of people likely to threaten security
  • recognition and detection of weapons
  • testing and calibration of security equipment and systems Assessment is continuous throughout the course. An MCA approved certificate is issued on successful completion of the course.
