Maritime and Offshore - Medical Courses

The Centre for Maritime and Offshore Technology is fully equipped for providing First Aid and other medical training at all levels.

Specialist First Aid courses for seafarers, workers in the offshore environment and local industries are provided by the Centre.

Instruction is given by fully qualified RGN/paramedics with occupational health and pre-hospital emergency care backgrounds.

Courses will be approved and validated by the appropriate authorities - The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) . Refresher training is also provided.

Where practical, courses can be delivered on company premises. All specialist equipment is brought to site. A suitable training room, OHP and video are required.

STCW 95

References to "STCW 95" relate to international standards of Training Certification and Watchkeeping formulated within IMO (International Maritime Organisation).

The International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers, 1978 was amended in 1995 and now contains mandatory standards applied to training and competence internationally.

Courses run at Lowestoft College are approved to STCW 95 standards where appropriate, and certification carries an approval notation.

Elementary First Aid - to STCW 95 Standards
This course forms part of the basic training required for all persons wishing to commence a career at sea.

The objective of the training is to give all persons intending to go to sea a basic knowledge of the immediate action to be taken upon encountering an accident or other medical emergency aboard ship.

If successful, candidates will be awarded a certificate which meets the criteria laid down for Elementary First Aid Aboard Ship in accordance with Section V1/1 of the STCW code. The training forms part of the requirements for basic training for seafarers employed or engaged in any capacity on board ship. The training must be undertaken before new entrants are assigned to any such shipboard duties. The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) approve these standards.

Medical Care Aboard Ship and Refresher - to STCW 95 standards
This course of training is required if you wish to qualify for a Chief Mates/Masters certificate of competency at sea. If successful, candidates will be awarded a certificate which meets the performance criteria laid down for Medical Care Aboard Ship in accordance with Regulation V1/4 of the annex of the STCW convention and section A-V1/4 (4-2) of the STCW Code and the Merchant Navy (Training and Certification) Regulations 1997. These standards are approved by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA).

This course is very comprehensive and includes:
  • Nursing principles and clinical examination
  • The respiratory system
  • The urinary system
  • Injuries and wounds
  • The gastrointestinal system
  • Eyes, ear, nose and throat and dental/oral conditions
  • Diseases and spread of infection
  • The female reproductive system
  • Medical care of rescued persons
  • External assistance and the evacuation of patients
Progress will be assessed through continuous assessment through multiple choice questionnaires during the course and an oral/practical examination on completion.

Pre-requisites

Medical First Aid Aboard Ship certificate. When applying for a refresher course candidates must be in possession of a current certificate.

    Medical First Aid Aboard Ship - To STCW 95 Standard
    This course is a requirement for seafarers wishing to progress at sea as a rating or become an Officer of the Watch (OOW).

    The course is very comprehensive and includes:
    • Construction and functions of the various parts of the human body
    • Medical stores carried on ships
    • General principles relating to pharmacology
    • The principles for dealing with accidents or other medical emergencies
    • The application of immediate first aid in the event of accident or illness
    The assessment consists of continuous assessment through multiple questionaires during the course and an oral/practical examination on day three.

    If successful, candidates will be awarded a certificate which meets the performance criteria laid down for Medical First Aid Aboard Ship in accordance with Regulation V1/4 of the annex of the STCW convention and section A -V1/4 (1-3) of the STCW Code and the Merchant Shipping (Training and Certification) Regulations 1997. These standards are approved by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA).

    Offshore First Aid and Refresher
    These courses satisfy the requirements of the "First Aid on Offshore Installations" Regulations.

    Delegates gain hands-on experience in dealing with:
    • Resuscitators
    • Entonox
    • Stretchers and casualty handling aids
    • Triage and evacuation group activities
    The four day Offshore First Aid includes a multiple casualty simulation

    A comprehensive manual is supplied together with additional handout material covering recent developments, including the use of resuscitators and the administering of entonox.

    Successful candidates will be issued with an HSC Certificate in Offshore First Aid, which is valid for three years.

    Pre-requisites

    There are no specific entry requirements for the Offshore First Aid courses. When applying for a refresher course, candidates must be in possession of a current certificate.

    If the certificate is out of date for a short period the HSE may allow a dispensation so a refresher course can be taken - during this period the candidate cannot practice first aid.
