This course of study leads to the issue of a Chief Mate Certificate of Competency. This is the next phase on the route to becoming a fully qualified Master Mariner.

    Description
    Master Unlimited (STCW Reg – II/2) Orals Preparation Course
    This course prepares candidates for the Master (Unlimited) MCA Oral examination. You will receive tuition, guided study and exam practice in preparation for the MCA Oral exam. The following subjects will receive particular attention during the course:
    • Seamanship
    • Shipboard Operations
    • Magnetic Compass
    • Shipmaster's Business & Law
    • MCA oral exam (arranged during final week of course)
    Presentations on other topics may be arranged where the whole group should benefit. Tutorials will be delivered as formal lectures and/or demonstrations as appropriate, supplemented by group discussion, question and answer sessions and directed study. Candidates are also encouraged to make full use of other learning resources, including the on-site library, Internet access and training software

    Entry requirements
    UK or equivalent MCA recognised Class 2/Chief Mate Unlimited Certificate of Competency and 36 months acceptable sea service since obtaining a Class 3/4 or OOW Certificate.

    If the NVQ Level 4 route was followed to Chief Mate certification, a minimum 12 months sea service as a watchkeeping Chief Mate while holding STCW ‘95 Table A II/2 Certificate of Competency (Chief Mate) or Class 2 certification.

    Candidates must hold a valid STCW certificate in ‘Proficiency in Medical Care aboard Ship’, a valid MCA recognised STCW GMDSS certificate and a personal medical fitness certificate recognised by the MCA before taking their MCA Orals. If not already held, these course can also be undertaken at the College.

    Officer of the Watch (Deck) STCW95 II/1 Certificate of Competency
    This course leads to the Certificate of Competency for Officer of the Watch (unlimited), which is a statutory requirement for a Junior Bridge Watchkeeping Officer.

    You will be studying:
    • Ship Stability, Ship Construction
    • Cargo Work
    • Ocean and Offshore Navigation
    • Coastal Navigation
    • Meteorology
    • Orals/Signals
    • Law
    Pre-requisites

    Delegates must be at least eighteen years old and must have served at sea in ordinary trading vessels, for either:

    Three years sea-service in any acceptable deck capacity, OR For two and a half years as a cadet or trainee deck officer undergoing a training programme recognised by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, in UK ships or in ships manned by UK senior officers, such programme being controlled from a UK based office. During your final year's sea service, six months of this period must be spent on duties associated with bridge watchkeeping under the guidance of a certified officer. These periods should be at least eight hours a day and not haphazard periods now and again.

    You will also have to hold/obtain:
    • Letter of testimonial covering the last year's sea service, stating ability, conduct and sobriety and certifying the requirement of bridge watchkeeping as stated above.
    • Valid Medical Certificate
    • EDH and CPSC certificates
    • Steering certificate if no EDH certificate held.
    Duration

    The Officer of the Watch course will involve approximately eighteen weeks at College studying an HNC in Nautical Science, plus 6 weeks for Navigation Aids and Equipment Simulator Training (NAEST), 2 weeks on a GMDSS GOC radio course and one week on an Efficient Deck Hand (EDH) course. Included in the period of study for an Officer of the Watch certificate, are First Aid Onboard Ship and Fire-fighting courses if required at additonal cost. It is not necessary to study both the main block and short courses consecutively - they maybe taken at intervals.

    There are three intakes, September, January and May.
