Art and design courses are popular with students because they can work with professional designers and artists to develop their individual talents.

Lowestoft students have had an excellent record of achievement and progression to
higher education.

Many of our students have won prestigious national competitions and awards with their original and inovative designs and projects.


Functional Skills in Maths, English and ICT are integrated into each course at an appropriate level.

Access to Art and Design - Level 3
This course prepares students for entry into Higher Education at BA (Hons) or Higher National Diploma levels in a broad range of specialised and combined art, craft and design based disciplines.
  • Phase1 introduces principles and practices common to all visual disciplines, including drawing, colour, visual research and problem-solving, media and materials manipulation.

  • Phase 2 explores the range of disciplines associated with degree and HND studies in art and design.

  • Phase 3 focuses upon the realisation of personal interests and goals as demonstrated by a range of individual negotiated assignments and a final major project.
Students also undertake studies in the History of Art and Design and are expected to complete two assignments based upon an historical or contextual research topic during the year.

Art & Design - BTEC Foundation Diploma Level 3 (Pre-Degree)
This course is for students committed to further study in art, who seek to develop a broad understanding of contemporary art and design practice and then to specialise in a particular area that interests them.

The course includes an introduction to the practice and context of the visual arts covering a broad range of art and design disciplines including:
  • Fine art
  • Three-dimensional design
  • Graphic design
  • Fashion
  • Textiles
Delivery is through practical workshop sessions and assignments with individual tutorials playing a key role throughout the course.

Art and Design BTEC First Diploma Level 2
This course develops skills in a range of disciplines including drawing, photography, graphics, using computers, fashion, textiles and three-dimensional design.

Successful completion of the course can lead to the level 3 BTEC National Certificate and beyond.

BTEC National Certificate Level 3 in Art and Design
This course introduces students to the broad range of art and design disciplines that can be found in contemporary design practice. Work is assignment based and allows students to gain experience in various areas including:
  • Graphic Design
  • Fashion
  • Textiles
  • Three-dimensional design
  • Two-dimensional design such as drawing and illustration
Time is spent in workshops allowing students the opportunity to gain skills in photography, ceramics, printmaking and figure drawing.
